Registered Nurse: Examination and Licensure
To qualify for a medical career as a Registered Nurse, or an RN, you must first graduate from an approved nursing training program and pass national certification and licensing examinations known as NCLEX-RN. This certification is universal throughout the United States; however, individual states issues licenses to nurses. Usually, a Registered Nurse can only practice in the state in which he or she is licensed. However, several states have developed reciprocal system with agreements between states and recognize licensing from other states. Licenses must be periodically renewed which may involve continuing education.
